Prepare to Be Boarded!
Carolyn Crimi takes readers on a swashbuckling voyage in her latest picture book HENRY AND THE BUCCANEER BUNNIES (Candlewick Press; October 2005; ISBN 076362449-7; $15.99) illustrated by John Manders.  Crimi is no stranger to wild adventures.  A reviewer from The Boston Herald celebrated her last book Boris and Bella by saying:  “Boris and Bella by Carolyn Crimi is a riot!  Boris is the neatest monster in Booville and Bella’s slime is the slimiest around!  The story of how these two monsters end up dancing at a party together will have your children in stitches.”  Crimi loves Halloween and easily transitioned from monsters to pirates.

Henry would rather read about pirates than actually be one.  Unfortunately, his dad, Barnacle Black Ear is the baddest bunny brute of all time and insists on Henry performing proper pirating duties.  He’s forced to swab the deck until he comes to his senses.  When a storm shipwrecks the crew, they need Henry’s books: 101 Things to Do with Palm Fronds and Coconuts, Quick ’n’ Easy Meals for Marooned Pirates, and other helpful titles to help them survive.

Carolyn Crimi aka the Pirate Queen, is the author of numerous books for young readers, including Boris and Bella, illustrated by Gris Grimly.  She says of HENRY & THE BUCCANEER BUNNIES, “While I don’t have long floppy ears or a pronounced overbite, Henry and I are kindred spirits, who love books and carrots!”  She has a B.A. from Lake Forest College in Art History and an MFA from Vermont College in Writing for Children.  To read about her plot to invade Hollywood and other interesting details about Crimi visit her website at www.carolyncrimi.com.  Carolyn Crimi lives in Evanston, IL with her husband and dog.

John Manders—thief, pirate, rogue, and children’s book artist—has illustrated several books for children, including Minnie’s Diner: A Multiplying Menu, written by Dayle Ann Dodds, and Señor Don Gato:  A Traditional Song.  He says, “I began my nautical career with my faithful parrot, Sherman, plundering merchantman and man-ó-war alike.  From piracy, it was a small step to children’s book publication.”  Today John Manders lives in Pennsylvania, far from the ocean’s beckoning waves.
