Urville

A City Entirely Imagined
By An Autistic Mind

Maps, buildings and thousands of years of history have been created in one extraordinary man’s mind.  Drawn and conceived in exquisite detail, Gilles Tréhin brings his city to life in URVILLE (May 2006, Jessica Kingsley Publishers Paperback, $25.00; 1-84310-419-9; 188 pages).  Tréhin explains, “Urville is a city 11,820,257 inhabitants (1999), the largest population of any city in France and Europe.  It is the capital of the administrative region of Provence Insulaire, a large island off the Côte d’Azur, between Cannes and St-Tropez, which has a population of 14,275,960.”  “This book is an illustrated guide to URVILLE.  Each drawing is accompanied by a description of the architectures, the history and the people who have left their mark here.  You will find cultural anecdotes, as well as the titles of books, plays, films or paintings.”  He takes us on a tour through each section of the city and shows us noteworthy neighborhoods and historic sites.

Tréhin, an autistic man with exceptional creative talents and an obsession with large cities, conceived and developed URVILLE over the course of 20 years.  It began as a series of lego buildings, growing much like a real city.  When the conception grew beyond the amount of space for necessary legos, he began to draw.  From the
age of five years-old he had the ability to draw in perfect perspective.  He says, “I built little by little the city concept starting with the subway map and I started writing the history of the city in a general way.”

The international influence of growing-up in France, the United States and London is evident in the city’s history, design and structures.  The Jumelles towers, for example, are close cousins to New York’s twin towers.  They were designed by the same architect, Minoru Yamsaki.  From being raided by the Normans to being occupied by the Nazis, URVILLE’s fictional history mirrors much of Europe.

A total of 300 drawings form this book.  Individuals with autism are often exceptionally talented in particular areas.  Perhaps, only an autistic mind could create such a fascinating world.
