Autism is on the rise. According to the Autism Society of America, autism occurs in 1 out of every 166 births. It is the fastest growing disability in the United States. Theories on why autism is becoming more prevalent have blamed everything from vaccines to diet as possible causes. In his new book, AUTISM, BRAIN AND ENVIRONMENT (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Hardcover, June 2006, 1-84310-438-5; $24.95), Richard Lathe contends that the dramatic rise in diagnosed cases of autism is the result of increased exposure to environmental toxicity combined with a genetic predisposition.
AUTISM, BRAIN AND ENVIRONMENT proposes that autism is a disorder of the limbic brain, which is damaged by toxic heavy metals present in the environment. Lathe argues that most Autism Spectrum Disorder children have additional physiological problems and that these, far from being separate from the psychiatric aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder, can produce and exacerbate the condition. Lathes research and closely-argued scientific case provides new insight into the causes of autism.
Using his background in brain research, Lathe noticed many features of autism were similar to brain injuries in the hippocampus. This discovery led him on a quest to find which key parts of the brain linked to autistic behaviors. The brain and body functions are intertwined. By understanding where the brain malfunctions, Lathe hopes to provide a better understanding and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Richard Lathe is director of Pieta Research, a biotechnology consultancy based in Edinburgh. He has extensive experience in academic and industrial research; his most recent area of interest has been in brain research and neuroscience, particularly focusing on the limbic system, autism and Alzheimers. He has previously held professorship at the Universities of Edinburgh and Strasbourg. He is the author of over one hundred peer-reviewed journal articles.
